California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed legislation aimed at granting uninsured residents access to stem cell treatments and diagnostics funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The bill was also designed to help the CIRM back studies that do not involve embryonic stem cells. Schwarzenegger said the measure would have undermined funding for work focused on human embryonic stem cells and the institute's authority to strike a balance between patient need and research.
