Markets throughout Asia were mixed today, with Chinese indexes soaring on hopes that mainland firms might boost stock valuations by buying back shares. The Shanghai Composite jumped 3.6%, the Shenzhen All Share index rose 3.2% and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index in Hong Kong gained 0.3%. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 Average dropped 0.9%, South Korea's Kospi rose 0.4% and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.1%. New Zealand's NZX 50 index shed 0.7%, Taiwan's Taiex edged down 1.2% and the Straits Times Index in Singapore slipped 1.4%.
