Recent reports show an overuse of CT, MRI, PET and other imaging procedures in health plans. Quality and radiology-benefits managers attribute this to the financial incentives given to physicians for ordering the tests and to the growing practice of requiring imaging tests early in a patient's workup. Experts say incorporating a streamlined prior-authorization process will help address the problem and serve as a way to educate doctors on clinical evidence.
