Pollution experts who testified at a House subcommittee hearing urged lawmakers to step up efforts to monitor the U.S. water supply for the presence and effects of recently found low-concentration contaminants, including pharmaceuticals and other chemicals. The Clean Water Act could be modified to "require monitoring and reporting of all chemicals in discharges, regardless of the identity and chemical nature," an environmental researcher said.
