Nurses have the expertise to be the front line of defense for preventing pressure ulcers, said a clinical nurse educator at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla. The center created a skin assessment management team to help staff with skin issues and ulcer prevention protocols, which has reduced the rate of pressure ulcers from 9.2% to 7.7%. NCH Healthcare System in Naples, Fla., brought on a wound, ostomy and continence nurse coordinator to help reduce nosocomial pressure ulcer rates.
