"Congress has a responsibility," writes Air Transport Association CEO James May in a hotel-industry editorial, "not only to the public but also to the travel and tourism industry in America, to come together in a bipartisan manner to find an immediate solution to our nation's energy crisis." With fuel recently accounting for 40% of the cost of an airline ticket, May stresses the dire situation facing not only airlines but also other travel and tourism sectors. "The unprecedented 71 percent year-over-year increase in the price of jet fuel, combined with a softening global economy, threaten the viability of our nation's airlines and leave our customers facing higher ticket prices, new fees and sharply reduced levels of air service."
