U.S. hospitals launched antimicrobial stewardship programs -- efforts that bring together pharmacists, microbiologists and infectious-disease experts to monitor the use of antibiotics and certain prescription drugs that have become ineffective in combating infections. The move came amid pending legislation in Congress aimed at establishing a federal office of antimicrobial resistance and a public health network to help identify potentially resistant bacterial strains before they turn into a widespread threat.
