The increase in natural gas production through horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing can make the U.S. less dependent on foreign oil, but some groups fear the process will pollute key water sources, reports The Christian Science Monitor. In response to the Monitor's questions about "fracking" safeguards, an API policy adviser said: "The current balanced management approach works -- allowing for effective state regulatory programs that appropriately protect the environment while providing for the essential development of oil and gas."
