Within a decade, algae, the simplest of all plants, could be effectively harvested as a fuel source, experts say. Algae is widely considered the promising source of biofuel because it can grow anywhere, does not compete with food crops for farmland and absorbs huge amounts of carbon dioxide. Companies from Boeing to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines are exploring ways to refine algae into a kerosene-grade fuel capable of powering aircraft.
