U.S. researchers were able to find more tumors in women with dense breasts and a high risk of cancer with the aid of molecular breast imaging than with mammograms, a recent study found. The experimental method, which uses a radioactive tracer to illuminate cancer cells, also gave fewer false alarms than mammograms. The findings suggest that MBI could be used to complement mammograms for higher-risk women and could offer a low-cost alternative to MRI.
