The high cost of commuting in the Bay Area has led residents to look at public transportation, and several new projects are in the works. A ferry serving southern San Francisco and Oakland is scheduled to open in 2010, and BART is expanding its San Jose service. Caltrain, which has seen ridership jump by 48% since 2004, is also adding new routes from Redwood City to Newark.
