A broad-based coalition of travel groups calling itself 100DollarOil.us is lobbying Congress to implement an "emergency energy policy that will bring down fuel costs to economically sustainable levels and keep Americans productively traveling by air." John Heimlich, Air Transport Association chief economist and vice president, says fuel costs are "overwhelming fares," leading to capacity reductions, layoffs and a complete loss of scheduled airline service at some 100 airports.
