Diabetics who develop high blood pressure need early, aggressive treatment because the combination increases their chances of death sevenfold, researchers warn. Dr. George Bakris, president-elect of the American Society of Hypertension, says that on average diabetics will need to take three hypertension medications at high doses to achieve good blood pressure control. He adds that diabetic patients who lose weight may be able to reduce their medication requirements.
