Hundreds of cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections were recorded last year in northern Virginia and parts of Maryland. Dr. Gary Simon, an infectious disease specialist at the George Washington University Medical Center, said the MRSA strain in 2007 was more dangerous than recent outbreaks, and more cases should be expected this year, as bacteria mutate rapidly, making them more resistant to antibiotics.
