The large percentage of urban youth dropping out of school has spurred city leaders to action, amid concerns that those who leave school early will severely compromise their earning ability over the course of their lifetimes, among other detrimental effects. "The whole cauldron of social and economic challenges [dropouts] face are increased, and those problems are laid at the doorstep of city hall, city government, community organizations and churches," said Marc Morial, a former New Orleans mayor and current National Urban League president.
