Google Play has added digital textbooks from major publishers, including Pearson, Wiley, Macmillan Higher Education, Random House, McGraw-Hill and Cengage Learning. Some books are available for sale, but many are available only for six-month rental, for about 80% off the purchase price, Google says.
The green housing market is projected to widen its market share by 29% to 38% in 2016, equivalent to $87 billion to $114 billion, according to McGraw-Hill Construction. McGraw-Hill surveyed green builders and remodelers and found that rising energy costs and the perceived higher quality of green housing are spurring the increase.
The bear market of 2007 to 2009 proved to be a difficult time for many Wall Street brokerage firms in terms of their stock-picking ability, but lately they have been regaining their prowess. The latest round of a Barron's stock-picking contest, which ended Dec. 31, showed that the average brokerage firm's picks beat the market for each period tracked. Individual winners included McAdams Wright Ragen, Morgan Keegan and Goldman Sachs.
Kevin Yen, director of strategic partnerships at Google's YouTube, told a crowd at the McGraw-Hill Media Summit it would not make sense for Google to buy a media company or content producer. "We're not good at content," he said. "We create platforms that allow other people to succeed."
CBS wants to make at least one high-profile acquisition, with special focus on new-media, content and broadcast and cable channels, President-CEO Leslie Moonves indicated at the McGraw-Hill Media Summit in New York. Moonves also criticized competing networks for targeting younger viewers, saying older audiences are bigger spenders.
