Stock-market indexes throughout Asia fell today as economic fears took their toll. The Nikkei 225 Average in Tokyo dropped 1.5%, declining to less than 11,000 points for the first time in more than three years. The broader Topix index lost 2.5%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index shed 2.2% and Taiwan's Taiex edged down 0.6%. Thailand's SET index gave up 0.9%, the Straits Times index in Singapore fell 2% and the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong lost 2.2%.
