Researchers at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute reported that they have turned human skin cells into induced pluripotent stem cells by "sprinkling" a chemical called valproic acid onto the cells. The chemical enabled the scientists to convert the cells by using just two out of the four genes commonly used for such a procedure. The finding holds promise for "reprogramming through purely chemical means, which would make therapeutic use of reprogrammed cells safer and more practical," researchers reported.
