The Senate passed a bill requiring positive train control on the nation's rails, a safety measure that could have prevented the Sept. 12 train crash in Los Angeles. The bill also limits rail workers' shifts to 12 hours or less, and adds 200 new safety inspectors to the payroll of the Federal Railroad Administration. The train-control technology can remotely stop a train in its tracks, and will be required on all train tracks by 2015.
