Teachers say that using rhyming nonsense phrases, like "criss-cross applesauce" to tell students to sit with their legs crossed under each other, is effective, and children respond to them. Using the "sing song" approach helps students remember instructions or commands, like to be "quick, quiet and clean" when using the restroom, teachers say.
