The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is using precast, segmentable bridge abutments for the first time. The abutments consist of seven pre-cast panels, and can cut construction time up to 30% over the traditional form-and-pour method. "Pre-cast bridge abutments could well provide Wisconsin's bridge designers and builders with another effective method for meeting the state's highway needs," said Michael Oliva, professor of engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
