Gartner, a market research firm, has fallen in and out of favor with investors. In late 2007 it adopted a controversial strategy for reporting to investors. CFO Christopher Lafond says one key element in Gartner's communications policy is that the head of investor relations acts as a strict gatekeeper. "He won't schedule meetings with short-term, high-turnover funds for me, our CEO, or any other executive," Lafond says.
