President George W. Bush on Tuesday signed an executive order making the implementation of NextGen "a leading priority for agencies across the federal government." Under the order, the Department of Transportation has 60 days to recruit support staff to begin moving forward on NextGen, and an advisory committee is to be in place within six months. Bush also used a speech at the DOT to press his case for slot auctions beginning next January, a policy that "will cause significant inconvenience to passengers from canceled flights and irreparable harm to airlines," according to the Air Transport Association.
