The LGBT community, in the wake of the approval of marriage bans in three states, can take a cue from Illinois, where activists have worked with lawmakers to gain incremental rights while working toward being equal, writes Advocate political editor Kerry Eleveld. "Just as our country pushes forward to form a more perfect union, so should we," Eleveld writes. "But let us not deify marriage to the exclusion of pursuits like employment nondiscrimination, hate-crime protections, and basic partnership recognition."
