The two ways to get rid of common heartburn are reducing the acid in the esophagus and reducing acid produced in the stomach. There are lifestyle remedies -- such as avoiding trigger foods, not overeating or not eating too close to bedtime -- and over-the-counter antacids or H2 blockers that lower stomach acid production. Chronic heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease is a bigger problem, however, that is diagnosed by a physician through an endoscopy and treated with medication or surgery.
