It took more than 16 million cubic yards of fill material to make an embankment more than a mile long when the Port of Seattle built its third runway, writes Susan Kemp in the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce. She notes that the project also needed three "mechanically stabilized earth" walls. The MSE walls, which will not fall even in an earthquake, "were needed to keep the embankment from extending over wetlands that form part of the Miller Creek Watershed," something that had been a priority for many.
