The service sector, including hotels, retailers and construction firms, saw business drop off in October as employment dropped and consumers spent less, according to the Institute for Supply Management. The group said its service sector index dropped more steeply than expected to 44.4 in October, down from 50.2 in September. A reading below 50 indicates a contraction in the economy.
