Regional airports such as Harrisburg, Pa., could lose direct service to New York City if the Transportation Department goes ahead with its controversial plan to auction slots in the nation's busiest market. "Slot auctioning will act like a tax increase by raising costs for airlines and their customers," says James May, president and CEO of the Air Transport Association. "To make up for this additional financial burden, airlines will be forced to operate only their most profitable flights, generally to larger cities." In a Sunday op-ed for the Harrisburg Patriot-News, May calls on Washington to invest in NextGen as a means of real relief for air traffic delays. "Unless the government wants Harrisburg and other mid-size communities around the country to lose scheduled air service, DOT should call off this foolish slot-auction experiment."
