On Friday, United Airlines will become the first U.S. carrier to test a new system for reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions on trans-Pacific flights. ASPIRE, the Asian and South Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions, includes more direct routing and a low-power, controlled glide for landing known as a "continuous descent approach." In September, a test by Air New Zealand found that a Boeing 777-200ER flying from Auckland to San Francisco using the system saved about 1,200 gallons of jet fuel.
