Facing an increased incidence of polio in northern Nigeria, the World Health Organization has decided to recruit trusted local chiefs to lead its immunization effort. "Our priority now is not eradication but interruption of polio transmission and we believe involving traditional chiefs will boost public acceptance of polio vaccine and wipe out pockets of resistance," said a WHO official. Nigeria has transmitted the disease to five African nations this year.
