MasterCard Advisors said U.S. consumers, faced with a recession and accelerating unemployment, drastically reduced spending during the first two weeks of November, raising the possibility of the worst holiday-shopping season in nearly 20 years. Apparel, footwear and appliances posted the biggest declines, while Internet sales experienced a comparatively moderate downturn of 7.5%.
