The Bush administration has doubled government financing for community health centers, allowing for 1,297 clinics to be expanded or created to help patients in areas that are medically underserved. The clinics are credited with providing the poor and uninsured a cost-effective alternative to using hospital emergency rooms for routine health care. As a U.S. senator, President-elect Barack Obama was a sponsor of a bill to quadruple federal spending on the program.
