A Canadian study clarifies earlier research, finding that a one-time set of steroid injections for pregnant women who are at a high risk for premature birth works to prevent problems for the baby. Researchers say additional injections of steroids, which speed development of fetal lungs and blood vessels, offer no further benefit. The steroids help reduce the risk of infant death, brain bleeding and breathing problems.
