DeMet’s Candy Co. plans to expand its Big Flats, N.Y., facility to add 21,300 square feet of space to boost production of Chocolate Turtles, pending a public review session on Friday. The expansion is part of a $12 million construction project that will see an additional $29 million in equipment and create 70 jobs in 2016. A second phase is also in the works to expand production of its Flipz brand in 2017.
Yildiz Holding, the Turkey-based owner of Godiva chocolates, has agreed to buy U.S.-based DeMet's Candy Co. from buyout company Brynwood Partners for $221 million. DeMet's makes Turtles covered nut clusters and Flipz chocolate pretzels. DeMet's operates facilities in New York and Pennsylvania.
