Recent research advances have enabled scientists to bind nanoparticles to radionuclides for MR, SPECT, PET and near-infrared optical imaging to detect inflammation or certain ailments, said Michael J. Welch, a nuclear medicine expert. He said nanoparticles will help bring a new era of diagnostic imaging and personalized medicine. The initial clinical use of nanoparticle-based agents will be for cardiac problems, Welch predicted.
