The 92,000-member Freelancers Union has started its own health insurance company to provide a safety net for general contractors. While the Freelancers Insurance Co. lost about 50 policyholders when it raised premiums and cut benefits on its premium plan, union founder Sara Horowitz said the new administration is watching its model. "This is a first in a 100-year-old strategy of labor," she said. "We're trying something new."
