The New York Times believes the facts released so far support the need for California's fair-elections commission to investigate whether the Mormon Church, in its support for the Proposition 8 marriage ban, violated state laws on campaign-related spending. "Churches, which risk their tax-exempt status if they endorse candidates, have more leeway in referendum campaigns," the Times writes. "Still, when they enter the political fray, they have the same obligation to follow the rules that nonreligious groups do."
