The Groundwater Replenishment System in Orange County, Calif., may be the largest facility in the world dedicated to water recycling. The plant takes in about 70 million gallons of wastewater a day, cleans it and discharges the treated water into aquifers. Water managers from around the world have visited the $480 million plant, and experts say creating more of these facilities could help address the world's water shortage.
