Statewide budget cuts in South Carolina are having an impact on the Program of Alternative Certification for Educators, which helps college graduates switch careers and become certified teachers within three years. Owing to the cuts, around 200 candidates enrolled in the program won't receive their $1,000 yearly stipends this year to cover the expense of the course work and related materials, and it is expected that even fewer of those in the program will receive the stipends in 2009.
