Aspen is known around the world as a skiing hot spot, but unlike other well known ski areas, there's more to this countercultural destination than the slopes. In the 19th century, Aspen boomed into a city of 12,000 and then quickly went bust when the Sherman Silver Purchase Act was repealed. However, remnants of that era remain.
