Construction of an $8.7 billion rail tunnel approved by the federal government this week will allow commuters to travel between Midtown Manhattan and some parts of New Jersey without transferring trains. New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine said, "this project will employ thousands of workers and help jump-start the economy in the present, and will pay dividends toward regional economic growth for decades to come." Meanwhile, lawmakers from New York and New Jersey are urging the Federal Transit Administration to increase federal funding for the project.
