Asphalt and cement may be the last materials that spring to mind as green products, but participants in a Transportation Research Board conference are finding ways to retool old construction standbys. Warm-mix asphalt at 250 degrees Fahrenheit releases less emissions than hot-mix asphalt at 300 degrees Fahrenheit and uses up to 30% less fuel. Aggregate materials that do not pass inspection for premium concrete can be recycled as "econoconcrete," which can be used as a bottom layer for roads.
