Sony executives are resisting CEO Howard Stringer's plan to cut 16,000 jobs and restructure the company. Stringer is caught between Japanese expectations of lifelong jobs and the belief of staff elsewhere that the Japanese operations are too flabby. The focus on cost-cutting seems to be taking a toll on corporate culture. "We used to get the message: 'Make a high-quality product,' " says one former engineer. "Now we don't know what we should be doing, except maybe not spending any money."
