Drew University in New Jersey recently opened what is believed to be the first green dormitory in the state. McLendon Hall was built to meet LEED certification. Lights dim in the hallways when they are not being used and water fixtures are low-flow. There also is a geothermal system to stabilize water temperatures so less energy is needed to heat it. Officials say the building was more expensive than a typical dorm, but they expect to spend less on energy.
