Declining occupancies at hotels around the nation took a toll on lodging stocks in 2008, with the Dow Jones U.S. Hotels Index down 58% over the year. Real estate investment trusts such as Ashford Hospitality Trust saw their shares drop as well. Even some big names, such as Marriott International and InterContinental Hotels Group, saw stocks sink by more than 40%.
