At this point, an economic-stimulus package introduced in the House of Representatives does not include large-scale construction projects capable of transforming the U.S. transportation infrastructure, critics say. The American Society of Civil Engineers has estimated that the nation needs $1.6 trillion to improve infrastructure. However, the current stimulus plan only budgets $30 billion for roads and $10 billion for rail and transit.
