It doesn't take industrial espionage to get inside your competitor's head. Recent survey results "indicate that astute companies have a solid chance to figure out what kinds of strategic initiatives their competitors will undertake spontaneously and when they'll act," McKinsey analysts say. Their top tip: Watch out for executives who say they are ahead of their financial targets because they are more likely to pull a surprise maneuver.
