The FDA said it has received reports of nine deaths caused by a transfusion-transmitted parasitic infection, called babesiosis, since the end of 2005. The agency said the number of cases of possible babesia infection from transfusion and post-donation babesiosis increased from zero in 1999 to 25 in 2007. Doctors are advised to consider babesiosis in patients with fever and weak immune systems who have undergone recent blood transfusions.
