The charges against Bernard Madoff are expected to bring a return of oversight to auditors. The Securities and Exchange Commission had relaxed a rule that allowed the auditor who handled Madoff's fund to escape oversight. The rule changes exempted private auditing firms from registering with the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, which was created after the collapse of Enron and WorldCom.
