Consumer demand for milk alternatives, such as almond and coconut milks, is expected to spur growth in the U.S. dairy-free desserts category by two or three times in the next five years, and New York ice cream consultant Malcolm Stogo is seeking to capitalize on the growth with the new DF Mavens brand. The company's tub and bar products are expanding to mainstream supermarkets such as Stop & Shop after starting out in upscale markets including Whole Foods.
A nutritional-scoring system will be introduced at Price Chopper supermarkets this week. Golub Corp. says it is the first North American retailer to introduce NuVal, which measures the nutritional value of almost all the food in its 117 stores.
In 2008, dollar sales for gourmet snack foods jumped nearly 31%. In 2009, look for more items made with goat milk and products with the Chinese fruit yumberry. Also, be on the lookout for milk, protein powder and nuts, all made from hemp.
Guggisberg Cheese of Millersburg, Ohio, has purchased Deutsch Kase Haus of Middlebury, Ind., from Trega Foods, a subsidiary of Canadian dairy cooperative Agropur. The Middlebury plant will continue to operate under the Deutsch Kase Haus name.
